Hikers made an accidental but very gruesome discovery at the edge of a forest in Niederneukirchen (Upper Austria). A total of six live traps were laid there. A cat carcass was also found in the area, which could possibly have served as bait for other animals. There is also a high stand nearby.
It wasn’t that long ago that a missing cat in St. Florian near Linz had been in a live trap for several days. Out of concern, three-time cat owner Sabine O. went for a walk with a friend on Sunday in the neighboring town of Niederneukirchen in a forest where she knew live traps had been set up.
Traps discovered by chance
“A dog was last seen in the area six months ago and went missing. I was looking for him in the area at the time and discovered the traps by chance,” the 52-year-old explains. She had come across a total of six box traps of varying sizes, which she now inspected again. “I wanted to see if there was a cat or another animal in there,” O. explains.
Dead cat laid out as bait?
Fortunately, that wasn’t the case, but she still made a gruesome discovery: “Near the live traps was a dead cat with its tail wrapped in tape.” It was an animal about six months old and must have been there for a long time. O. took photos and reported the find to animal rights activist Andrea W. (60) from Leonding, who informed the ‘Association against Animal Factories’. “The cat could have been bait,” W speculates.
Site examined
VGT employees investigated the site on Monday afternoon and secured the carcass. The dead animal was taken to the Veterinary Institute of Pathology in Vienna, where the cause is being investigated. The tape on the tail is also a mystery.
A hunter who wished to remain anonymous expressed his suspicions to the “Krone”: “Poison could have been placed under the tape so that foxes or martens that eat the carcass would die. Other animals that only lick the dead cat, but not.” If the investigation reveals incriminating facts, the VGT plans to file a complaint.
