According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine is already preparing for the coming winter after months of Russian attacks on power plants. “We have made decisions to restore the energy sector,” Zelenskyy said in his video address Monday night.
Since last fall, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian power plants with missiles and drones. As a result, many Ukrainian regions experienced repeated power and heating failures, especially during the cold season. For this reason, Kiev has repeatedly accused Moscow of “energy terrorism”.
First name visit from Estonia
Before his evening speech, Zelenskyi had visited the Zhytomyr region – with Estonian Prime Minister Kajas Kallas, who had come to Ukraine for the first time since the Russian invasion more than a year ago. Once again Zelenskyy thanked the meeting for the support of the Baltic EU country.
In turn, Kallas pledged further support: “I came here with the strong message that we believe in Ukraine’s victory and that we believe in Ukraine, a thriving liberal democracy and a free-market economy that is part of the Euro-Atlantic family.”
Ukraine has been fighting off a Russian invasion with Western support for nearly 14 months. The Baltic EU and NATO state of Estonia, which borders Russia, is one of Kiev’s main supporters.
