According to Finnish Agriculture Minister Antti Kurvinen, the import blockades imposed by some EU countries on Ukrainian grain are “not very sensible”. On the one hand they support Ukraine, on the other hand they hinder the export of grain, which means that the country loses an important source of income. The aggressor Russia in particular would benefit from it.
About ten days ago, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria temporarily restricted grain imports from Ukraine. The Eastern European countries justified this, among other things, with the problems of their own farmers due to the favorable competition from Ukrainian products. Out of solidarity with the country, no customs duties are currently levied on goods from Ukraine. The transit of goods through the eastern EU countries is still possible. A uniform solution is currently being sought at EU level.
Grain as an important source of income for Ukraine
Exports to and through the EU are an important source of income for Ukraine, which has been hit by the Russian attack. The issue will be the focus of a meeting of EU agriculture ministers in Luxembourg on Tuesday, Swedish Agriculture Minister Peter Kullgren, chair of the meeting, said.
Croatia for unified EU solution
Before the meeting, Croatian minister Marija Vuckovic also criticized the measures taken independently and advocated a unified EU solution. Latvia and France take a similar position. However, the ministers also emphasized on Tuesday that they understand the problems of Ukraine’s neighbors.
