Before Putin’s visit – South Africa wants to leave the “unfair” ICC

Date:

South Africa has not condemned Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. The country says it wants to remain impartial. The international arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin has now placed the government in Pretoria in a dilemma. The Russian president plans to participate in a meeting of the so-called BRICS countries in August. But the question of an arrest might then even be superseded. South Africa wants to end its membership of the International Criminal Court.

“The ruling party has decided that South Africa should withdraw from the ICC,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday. Some states cited “unfair treatment” as the reason. “We would like to discuss the issue of unfair treatment in detail, but for now the ruling party has decided to leave,” said Ramaphosa.

South Africa will this year host a summit of leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In theory, the handcuffs should click when Putin arrives.

South Africa wants to “realign the world order”
Only recently, senior representatives of South Africa’s ruling party, the ANC, said they wanted to strengthen their friendship with Putin’s United Russia party. Talks in Moscow include the “realignment of the world order”, which aims to “reverse the effects of neo-colonialism and the previously prevailing unipolar world,” the ANC said in early April.
