Montana decision bans transgender MPs from parliament

Date:

In the debate over transgender rights, the fronts in the US are getting tougher. More than a dozen Republican-ruled states in the United States have banned all or part of sex reassignment therapy for adolescents. Now a Montana congressman who openly identifies as a trans woman has been barred from serving in the House of Representatives.

In a speech, Democrat Zooey Zephyr accused Republican lawmakers of having “blood on their hands” if they ban medical treatment for transgender youth. Zephyr addressed the high suicide rate among affected youth. She will certainly take action against such a ban, she stressed. With the statement she had violated the morality of the parliamentary chamber. In addition, her words could also be interpreted as a call to violence, as evidenced by the accusation that led to Zephyr’s exclusion.

MEPs decided on Wednesday that she could continue to vote, but that she would not be able to appear more in person until the end of the session on May 5. It is the latest escalation in the American conservatives’ fight against gay rights.

In the US state of Tennessee, two black Democratic MPs were expelled a few weeks ago after protesting in parliament against lax gun laws. With their protest, the parliamentarians “disturbed the work of the House and caused disorder,” the statement said.
