A fire broke out in an apartment on Leopoldauer Platz in Vienna-Floridsdorf on Thursday afternoon. The emergency services were alerted to extinguish the fire and rescue a 53-year-old seriously injured woman from the apartment. Then on Friday morning the sad news: the 53-year-old died a little later in hospital.
First, the 53-year-old was flown by helicopter to the intensive care unit at General Hospital with life-threatening injuries to her face. The Viennese professional fire brigade extinguished the flames. Her dog was also rescued from the burning apartment and received veterinary care.
Cigarette as a trigger
However, the woman’s injuries were such that she died in hospital a short time later. Police say the fire may have been caused by a lit cigarette. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
