The European Commission has identified 5,000 “critical” products, from semiconductors to medical devices, that it will try to produce in the European Union.
The ministers of the European Union, in the informal meeting of Consumption and Industry and Internal Market performed in Bilbao, are advanced in the design of own strategy to reduce external dependence on strategic products.
Didier ReindersCommissioner for Justice, has assured that the Commission has a list of 5,000 “critical” products: semiconductors, hydrogen, raw materials, internet products, weapons, health goods… The EU depends on foreign production, especially China, of many of these goods.
The EU wants to design policies that allow creating a “resilient value chain” and increasing autonomy. To do this, Reynders explained, a stable regulatory framework must be developed, public investment in these sectors must be facilitated, and the “risk” for private investors in strategic technologies must be reduced.
In addition, the Commissioner has pointed out that the second major challenge is achieving net-zero emissions in industrial production, for which he hopes to pass a law this semester.
“Very, very positive contributions” were made at the informal meeting in Bilbao, under the Spanish Presidency of the EU, said the Minister of Industry of the Government of Spain, Hector Gomezto prepare a “clear roadmap” to be discussed at the informal summit in Grenada in October.
The meeting started on Monday with the meeting of the ministers of consumption, where the balance of the Consumer Agenda 2020-2025 and sustainable consumption were central.
