There was almost a catastrophe in the Speikboden ski area in South Tyrol. A huge boulder broke loose above the valley station – as spectacular images from a surveillance camera show.
At the beginning of the week, as motorists pass a valley station in South Tyrolean Ahrntal, they are threatened by a disaster from above. In the Speikboden ski area, a huge boulder has slid towards the valley. The rock hit a road at the valley station, just missing passing cars. The near-disaster was captured by a surveillance camera. The photos were distributed by the Sand volunteer fire brigade in Taufers.
Spectacular shot from a security camera
The recording shows shots of the Ahrntalstraße. In the top left of the photo you can see a car-sized boulder making its way into the valley. Slowly at first and then faster and faster. There are only seconds between the impact and a passing car passing the spot. The valley station also just missed the stone floor.
No one was injured
The powers speak of happiness in disguise. The ski area is currently closed because the winter season is over. The parking lot was therefore empty and the road had little traffic in the low season. There are no injuries.
Around 10 a.m., the Sand im Taufers fire brigade was alerted, which directed traffic. An excavator then cleared away the rock. An assessment of the slope revealed that a piece of rock had apparently come loose, which now needs to be secured and removed.
