Tougher punishments – Russian soldiers get jailed for being drunk

Date:

Russian soldiers can be placed in makeshift cells for trying to terminate their contract of service or for being drunk. This was announced by representatives of the British Ministry of Defense on Sunday based on reports from the Russian armed forces.

These would be holes in the ground covered with a metal grid. “In the early months of the war, many Russian commanders took a relatively lax approach to enforcing discipline, allowing those who refused to serve to return home peacefully,” the statement said. Since the fall of 2022, there have been several initiatives to improve discipline among the troops. Chief of Staff Valeri Gerasimov, who took over command in January, is said to be particularly involved.

Those armed forces who want to terminate their service contracts or who are drunk are now punished more severely. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense in London has been publishing information on the state of affairs on a daily basis, citing intelligence information. The government in Moscow, on the other hand, speaks of a disinformation campaign.

For example, the British Ministry of Defense reported on Saturday that the Russian army had a new missile strategy. It is no longer primarily about destroying infrastructure, but about attacks on Ukrainian reserve units and military assets.
