For an hour and a half, rescuers searched for a missing sailor in the Danube at the famous Schlögener loops. At midnight he went overboard – it is still uncertain whether he will survive.
The 59-year-old German boarded the ship around midnight, followed a few minutes later by his wife. But she didn’t see him anymore, only heard a splash in the water. She couldn’t find her husband in the dark and raised the alarm.
Seven fire brigades stationed along the Danube set out in boats to search for the missing person. Groups of divers from five other fire brigades supported the comrades in the search in the dark and in poor visibility in the water.
Sailor in hospital
After about an hour, around 1:30 a.m., the missing person was discovered. He was severely hypothermic and gave no sign of life. The 59-year-old was rescued on the spot and resuscitated. The Red Cross took him to the university hospital in Linz. But he still needed support to keep the cycle going. It is not yet clear whether the rescue operation was successful.
