For the second time in three weeks, an administrative court in Trento has blocked an order from Trentino Governor Maurizio Fugatti to kill the “problem bear” JJ4. This is said to have killed a 26-year-old jogger a month ago.
Fugatti had issued a second firing order last weekend after a first order was frozen by the administrative judge. Now he failed – at least for the time being – again: until the next session of the administrative court, in which at least three judges must participate, the bear caught two weeks ago may not be killed, the court said. It is not yet clear when the court will meet again.
Animal rights activists rejoice
Animal protection organizations welcomed the court’s ruling on Tuesday. The animal protection organization LAV had officially offered Fugatti and the Italian Minister of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin to immediately move JJ4 to a safe place.
jogger killed
The jogger was found dead on Monday morning on a forest path in the Trentino municipality of Caldes, in a valley (Val di Sole) popular with hikers and tourists. According to current knowledge, the bear, which has attracted attention several times, killed the man. It is the sister of the “problem bear” Bruno, who was shot dead in Bavaria in 2006. After an attack in 2020, the bear should have been killed, a court ruled against the murder. The bear is currently in an animal shelter with another “problem bear”.
According to the province, the number of bears in the area has increased enormously since the EU project “Life Ursus”. Instead of the planned 50, about 100 wild animals have now settled.
