Appearance without a headscarf – The Iranian judiciary is investigating actresses

Date:

The Iranian judiciary is investigating two actresses who appeared without a headscarf. Afsaneh Bajegan (62) and Fatemeh Motamed-Aria (61) took part in an event in the capital Tehran in honor of a fellow actor. A photo of Bajegans was subsequently shared thousands of times on social media.

The authorities had recently announced that the hijab requirement would be enforced more strictly again. The police also use video surveillance. Actresses who show solidarity with the protest movement are repeatedly registered as suspects by the Iranian judiciary. For example, the actresses Taraneh Alidoosti and Katajun Riahi have now been imprisoned.

Proceedings are also underway against other filmmakers. The protests, led mainly by girls and women, were provoked by the death of young Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody in the autumn. She was arrested for allegedly violating the headscarf requirement.

New wave of poisonings in girls’ schools
Meanwhile, new cases of poisoning in girls’ schools have been reported. Norway-based human rights organization Hengaw reported cases in the capital Tehran and the protest-torn region of Kurdistan on Monday. There was no official information yet. The incidents have been causing unrest in the country for months. Schoolgirls were treated in hospitals across the country and doctors spoke of gas poisoning.

Authorities registered thousands of suspected cases. Meanwhile, out of concern, parents did not let their children go to school. According to the Iranian secret service, which refers to authorities, it should not be an organized network. This cannot be independently verified. Critics describe the poisoning as revenge for the demonstrations. The media, family and those affected are said to have been criticized for not speaking about the cases.
