Driver seriously injured – wheel loader fell almost 200 meters over a rock face

Date:

A dramatic incident took place in Heiligenblut on Tuesday morning. A wheel loader almost fell over a rock ledge while clearing snow. The 64-year-old driver was seriously injured in the accident.

The 64-year-old from Spittaler was busy clearing snow in the high alpine terrain. When the excavator operator wanted to pour a shovelful of snow over a slope, the vehicle must have driven too far over the embankment and tipped over the embankment.

Stopped just before the edge of the cliff
The vehicle, which weighed several tons, then slid about 50 meters down a slope and stopped just before a rock wall about 200 meters high. “The 64-year-old was thrown from the vehicle during the accident,” police said.

The Heiligenblut fire brigade had to rescue the seriously injured worker. The 64-year-old was then flown by rescue helicopter to the accident hospital in Klagenfurt. “The wheel loader, which was about to fall over, was hung back by the Heiligenblut and Großkirchheim fire brigade and held in place until it was rescued,” the police said.
