Further observations followed on Monday and Tuesday at Norderney and Borkum (lower Saxony). “Unfortunately it is everywhere,” said a spokeswoman. In the first instance there was no precise information about how much paraffin was rinsed. It is not yet known where the fine, up to ten centimeters long.
Pure paraffin is not classified as a danger to the water. However, industrial paraffins can contain toxic associated substances. The authorities have therefore advised not to touch the nodules. “Bathing and walking on the beach is nevertheless possible without limitations and safe,” the island said, which is located in the Wadden Sea in a lower saxony between Borkum and Norderney.
