The British Home Secretary, Pritti Patelhas signed the order with which the extradition to the United States of Wikileaks founder Julian AssangeWikileaks founder who leaked classified documents exposing war crimes committed by the North American country and was charged with espionage. The organization is appealing the British government’s decision.

Assange has unsuccessfully tried in British courts to prevent his transfer to the United States, citing ill health and the severe sentence he could face.

“The UK courts have not determined that it was repressive, unfair or procedural abuse to extradite Assange,” with the Home Office explaining that in this case there is no more than giving administrative approval to the Handover.

However, Wikileaks believes it is “a black day for press freedom and British democracy”, and has confirmed an appeal that is expected to delay the process by about a month. The organization has reminded that Assange in the United States faces a possible prison sentence of 175 years.
