Heavy shelling – Sudan: ceasefire broken on the first day

Date:

There was supposed to be a ceasefire in crisis-ravaged Sudan from Thursday to May 11, but that too was broken. Airstrikes and heavy shelling broke out early Thursday morning at the presidential palace in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

According to the Arab television channel Al-Jazeera, there were airstrikes and heavy shelling near the presidential palace in the Sudanese capital on Thursday morning.

However, hopes for an actual ceasefire were slim. Since the fighting began more than three weeks ago, ceasefires of up to 72 hours have been repeatedly negotiated, but repeatedly broken.

UN Secretary-General warns of ‘total war’
During his visit to Kenya, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres again called for an end to violence in Sudan. “The fighting has to stop — it has to stop now,” Guterres said in Nairobi on Wednesday. “Before more people die and the conflict escalates into all-out war that could affect the region for years to come.”

At the same time, he assured that despite the uncertain situation, the United Nations (UNO) would try to bring urgently needed humanitarian aid to the Northeast African country: “The staff of the humanitarian organizations and their funds must be respected.”
