Dramatic scenes took place in Deutschkreutz. A smuggler had fled from Hungarian police in a fully occupied car and broke through the border into Austria. Pursued by the officers with flashing lights and a siren, the perpetrator raced on through Horitschon and Lackendorf. “A search was immediately launched,” said the Burgenland police directorate. Hours later, the wanted criminal from Georgia and three accomplices were arrested.
The alarm went off at around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hungarian agents in two emergency vehicles had followed a tout driver behind the wheel of a Polish car and were already hot on his heels. The Georgian thundered across the border in Deutschkreutz. “Due to the high speed, the car could not be stopped,” said the detectives.
Dangerous ride
Police patrols from Burgenland give chase. The perpetrator raced from the B62 onto the S31 in the direction of Oberpullendorf. Things got really dangerous at the Stoob-Süd interchange.
“When he tried to stop the fugitive, he pushed off a police car. The risky, reckless driving style endangered several road users. Two parked cars were damaged in the Oberpullendorf urban area,” the state police directorate said.
Walked into the forest
The fast breakaway continued on the provincial road in the direction of Großwarasdorf. Suddenly the driver stopped on the verge, jumped out of the car and fled into the Stoober forest. A Turkish family with three small children remained behind in the car. An asylum application was submitted on the spot.
Witness called the police
With assistance dogs and drones, the police continued to search for the smuggler – initially in vain. When the criminal got into a car with Italian license plates near the forest around 3:30 p.m., he was noticed by a pedestrian. The witness raised the alarm.
The car was stopped on the S31 towards Eisenstadt just before the Neutal exit. In the car were the fugitive Georgian (27) and three compatriots – 25, 27 and 33 years old. All three are also suspected of smuggling.
Interior minister: ‘Smugglers don’t care about human lives’
“This incident proves once again that the criminal smugglers don’t care about human lives. By acting soberly and consistently, the police officers prevented worse things. I want to thank all the officials from Hungary and Burgenland who have been deployed,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.
