Up to three years in prison are at stake: Sophie Karmasin is the first high-ranking ÖVP politician to appear in court. The so-called “Karmasin Cartel”, as the WKStA calls it, is currently being investigated in detail in court. “The whole republic squinted at Sabine Beinschab’s testimony,” says “Krone” court editor Anja Richter, “She was in a good mood and smiling.” Yet she was not allowed to testify…
She was on time. And she wanted to talk. At 2:57 pm it was over, the judge declared the day of the trial over. Reason: “He didn’t want the judges to sit until midnight.” Four other witnesses were allowed to describe their impressions of Karmasin’s allegations. They all have one thing in common: they contradicted Sophie Karmasin’s statements. “Sabine Beinschab will do the same”, the court journalist is convinced.
The third day of the trial was all about Beinschab
So now everything has to be postponed. The third day of the trial will take place on May 16. There should be no time problem this time: the day is reserved only for the testimony of star witness Sabine Beinschab. A verdict is expected on May 23. But Beinschab may have to share the third day of the trial: “A verdict will be handed down on May 16”, Richter knows. But she doesn’t think it likely. The possibility of Karmasin going to jail seems equally unlikely. “It is quite possible that she will receive a suspended sentence” – if she is convicted at all. She is charged with conspiracy and fraud.
Tears, outbursts of anger & co: ‘Emotions often run high’
Karmasin appeared calm and authentic on both days of the trial, as Richter describes. “But there was also a small crack in it.” It’s not always so civilized. The “Krone” journalist is always close by at all important trials and has a lot to say: “Recently, a defendant screamed for an hour and a half. Finally, the judge yelled back.” Of course, Sophie Karmasin is not the only woman who comes to court. Which crimes are more often committed by women? Anja Richter knows all about it…
Lots of other explosive details, like what sentence Sophie Karmasin uttered more than 40 times, whether she could get away with “active remorse” and why the trial really could have erupted before Sabine Beinschab’s testimony can be seen in the video above.
