A whale that washed up near Bridlington in Yorkshire and died on the local beach has mutated into a bizarre tourist magnet in England. Entire families travel to marvel at the 17-meter-long, 30-ton carcass and immortalize it in a selfie. The authorities are desperately fighting the flow of visitors.
The 17-meter fin whale poses logistical problems for authorities. The aim is to avoid decomposing the marine mammal on the beach, instead it must be transported in one piece.
Authorities called on many onlookers to stay away from the animal – but further tourist flows are to be feared until the carcass is removed.
Whale will not be divided
“We will be working with contractors in the coming days to try to get the whale off the beach in one piece, and we are working with zoological experts to determine the reason for this sad event,” a council spokesman said.
According to experts, fin whales are rarely sighted in the North Sea. They usually stay in deeper waters. It wasn’t until early April that a dead sperm whale washed up on the North Sea coast near Grimbsby, in County Lincolnshire, a little further south.
