1st place in Austria – First day of summer: Innsbruck broke through 25 degrees

Date:

Summer sent its first greetings to Austria on Thursday – specifically to Innsbruck: In the late afternoon at the university’s weather station, the 25-degree mark was reached or exceeded for the first time this year, marking the first summer day of the year.

Warm and energetic air masses are currently entering the Alps in a southwesterly flow at high altitude, and calm and sunny weather also dominated Thursday under the influence of high pressure, according to the weather service Ubimet. This was noticeable in Innsbruck on the first summer day of the year – around 5 p.m. a little more than 25 degrees was measured in the Tyrolean capital.

First day of summer later this year
“If you look at the long-term average, the first day of summer has usually been registered much earlier in recent years,” the experts continue. For the last ten years, this has usually been as early as April. In the years 2021, 2017 and 2016, the bar was even broken at the end of March, in 2018 the first warm day with temperatures above 30 degrees was recorded on April 20.

If you look at the state capitals and compare the long-term average from 1991 to 2020 and that from 1961 to 1990, the first summer day in the past 30 years has been recorded on average one to two weeks earlier. “In Innsbruck it used to be around May 12 on average, in the past 30 years it was already April 29,” explains Ubimet Chief Meteorologist Manfred Spatzierer.

The border is also reached about ten days earlier in Klagenfurt and Linz, and almost two weeks in Graz.

It’s getting more and more fickle
How’s the weather? “Although showers and thunderstorms are still limited to the west of the country on Friday, a mixed weather phase with a mix of sunshine, some clouds and numerous showers and thunderstorms will sweep across the country from Saturday,” it said. Little will change in the coming week, more stable weather is not expected in the first instance. In addition, temperatures are also going down again, so there are no more summer days in sight for the time being.
