In the acts of the Antxua Eguna eta Arrantzale Eguna, which is being held today in the Gipuzkoan town of Getaria, the Basque Government’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy has released a first balance sheet of anchovy and mackerel fisheries for 2023.
The Basque fleet unloaded until the beginning of May 3241 tons of anchovies at 1.97 euros per kilo —in 2022 in the same period 4620 tons unloaded at an average of 1.08 euros— and 7474 mackerel at 1.05 euros per kilo —Last year there were 7,945 tons at 1.42 euros per kilo. However, the total kilograms of anchovies unloaded in the ports of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa since the start of the season (3 March) amount to 5,926 tons, while the total amount of mackerel unloaded reaches 11,625 tons.
This first assessment of the anchovy and mackerel fisheries was presented this morning by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy of the Basque Government, Bittor Oroz, during the events of the Antxua Eguna and Arrantzale Eguna, which is held in the Gipuzkoan city of Getaria. According to what he said, “the development of the coastal area so far can be considered satisfactory, both for catches and for the average price obtained, in both cases higher than last year’s data for the same dates.”
With the anchovy landings to date, the total turnover of the Basque fleet amounts to 6,377,612 euros, while the mackerel fishery reaches 7,474,247 euros on this first balance.
Also present at the Getaria event were the mayor of the city, Haritz Alberdi, the Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Basque Government, Leandro Azkue, the President of the Getaria Brotherhood, Emeterio Urresti, and the President of the Brotherhoods of Bizkaia, Eusebio Arantzamendi.
