About 180 dead birds have been discovered so far in the Rhine delta and the responsible authorities have already issued stable demands. Visitors to the nature reserve are urged to take precautions.
The bird flu virus H5N1 has been found in the Vorarlberg nature reserve Rheindelta on Lake Constance. According to the veterinary department of the Vorarlberg state government, a “striking bird death” occurred in a broadcast last weekend. A number of safety measures now apply to poultry farms and visitors.
About 180 dead birds, mainly black-headed gulls, have been discovered so far. Sample testing by AGES had confirmed an infection with the avian flu virus, it said. The poultry farms in the region were informed before the findings were known and asked to keep them in their sheds. Since Friday, Gaißau, Höchst, Fußach and Hard have had a general obligation to keep poultry in stables. In addition, further safety measures have been ordered to ensure that the virus does not enter the stables.
Clean clothes and shoes after visit
Visitors to the nature reserve were advised to thoroughly clean shoes and clothing after a visit and not to enter the stables. Anyone who finds dead birds should leave them behind and inform the Rijndelta Nature Conservation Association or the municipality. The applicable leashed obligation for dogs and the driving ban must be complied with urgently. The virus, currently found in wild birds in many European countries, poses no threat to humans.
