Five alarms in one night – after 180 cases in two and a half years: the fire brigade of Wattens in Tyrol cannot rest because of a sick woman. There is no solution in sight, the burden on the emergency services is and remains enormous.
A month ago, the “Krone” showed the constant annoyance in Wattens. Now it started again Wednesday evening. The first distress call came in at 3:15 am, the fifth and last at around 8:30 am. As so many times since 2021, a mentally disabled and apparently drug-addicted woman called 911, wanting to have noticed a fire. Again, the specter around the apartment building was soon over – false alarm!
The entire settlement suffers
“But we have no choice but to check every time. With a small team, but it’s very stressful. Because we don’t have shifts at the volunteer fire brigade, we have to work the next day,” fire chief Martin Schrott describes the unacceptable situation.
And, of course, the entire settlement suffers when emergency vehicles show up in the middle of the night, even though the siren has been turned off. The police and the Red Cross also repeatedly prove in vain. Only rarely can the caller be calmed down by the dispatcher.
Returned quickly after delivery
According to Schrott, the woman was admitted to Hall Hospital after the latest alarms. But since there is no real danger or threat from her, she must be released soon. Solutions were discussed with, among others, the police, control room and state fire brigade inspector Alfons Gruber, but so far without results. “We are at our wits end,” says Schrott. More hard times are coming!
