A tragic incident occurred in front of an emergency shelter for migrants in the US state of Texas on Sunday. A motorist drove his vehicle into a waiting group of people. Seven people were fatally injured.
The incident in the city of Brownsville on Sunday morning (local time) left several other people injured, police said. The driver has been arrested. It is still unclear whether it was an accident or on purpose, police spokesman Martin Sandoval said on local television. According to the spokesperson, the driver hit people while they were waiting at a bus stop in front of the property. In the building, which was actually intended as a shelter for the homeless, immigrants were housed because of the “current crowds”.
Scheme expires: large flow of migrants soon?
US authorities are currently preparing for a deportation rule known as “Title 42” to expire on Thursday. The regulation introduced in March 2020 at the start of the corona pandemic under then-President Donald Trump provides that migrants apprehended at the border with Mexico will be immediately sent away to prevent the corona virus from spreading further.
With the expiry of the regulation, authorities expect an attack by refugees and migrants at the border with Mexico. The government has already made it clear that it will continue to take firm action against illegal border crossings. At the same time, more opportunities for legal entry must be created.
