At least 27 people have been found dead in a mine fire in Peru. The attorney general of the province of Condesuyos in southern Peru announced this on Monday (local time). The miners suffocated about 500 meters from the entrance to the Yanaquihua mine on Saturday, the mine owner said after the incident.
Police officers also assisted in the salvage work to recover the dead, the Interior Ministry said.
According to previous information from the regional government, a short circuit had caused the fire in the pit. The fire is being thoroughly investigated to identify those responsible and “to ensure compensation for the families of the bereaved,” said regional energy and mining director Yakir Rosas.
