On Monday, a 74-year-old in Straden, in southeastern Styria, shot two women with a shotgun – we reported. One of them suffered life-threatening injuries. The shooter committed suicide after his crime. Now homicide investigators have precisely reconstructed the crime scene.
The drama in quiet Straden started on Monday around 11:45 am: in the stairwell of an apartment building, a 74-year-old fired two shots at the two women with a shotgun. The man was in possession of the murder weapon, according to police.
The second victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time
The reason is probably a long smoldering neighborhood dispute between the 74-year-old and his 52-year-old neighbour. Coincidentally, the 61-year-old acquaintance of the neighbor was in the house at the time of the crime. According to investigators, she was very lucky in the accident and “only” suffered an abrasion in the hip.
The 52-year-old, on the other hand, was hit in the stomach and seriously injured. According to the police, her condition is currently stable, but the woman is still in a life-threatening condition.
As the “Krone” reported, a witness heard shots coming from the house and found the injured women at the entrance to the crime scene. The man showed civic courage and took the injured in his own car to the nearby municipal office, where they could receive first aid from the rescue team.
The suspect lay dead on the balcony
Several police officers from the Southeastern Styrian district secured the property from the outside. The officials on the ground received support from troops from the Standby Unit, the South Negotiation Group and drone reconnaissance. Requested specialists from the Cobra Task Force and the Rapid Reaction Forces entered the crime scene.
There they found the suspect, dead on the balcony of his apartment. He shot himself with the murder weapon. After the man’s identity was established, the crime scene was released for investigation.
The investigations continue
The Graz prosecutor’s office ordered an autopsy of the body, the appointment of an expert to examine weapons, the seizure of the murder weapon and the continuation of the investigation. These are managed by the Styrian Criminal Investigation Department, research area life/life.
