A serious fire broke out at a sailing and surfing school in Reifnitz in Carinthia on Saturday. It was initially unclear what caused the catastrophic fire.
Blazing flames shot from the sailing school building and had already gripped a neighboring boathouse when the local fire brigade arrived. The fire brigade fought the fire with 14 vehicles and 80 emergency services and was able to quickly get the situation under control thanks to the sufficient water supply of Lake Wörthersee.
But the building, numerous sailboats and stand-up paddleboards were completely destroyed anyway – the adjacent boathouse was also badly damaged. Experts have been able to determine the cause of the fire.
“Probably electrical fault”
“The fire was probably caused by an electrical defect in a light current cabling in a closed storage room,” explain the district fire detectives of the BPK Klagenfurt, who were supported in the investigation by experts from the fire prevention service in Carinthia and Styria. “The fire quickly spread to the entire building.”
The building, the entire inventory and stored sailing boats and SUPs were completely destroyed in the fire. The exact amount of damage is not yet known.
