Criticism from the UN chief – rich countries have “closed doors” to migrants

Date:

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sharply criticized the development of migration policies in the rich countries of the world. On the other hand, he acknowledged the generosity of poorer countries: “The South is still willing to take in hundreds of thousands of refugees, as in Sudan. But in the developed world, many doors are closed.”

During his tenure as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees between 2005 and 2015, “international refugee laws were respected practically everywhere in the world,” Guterres said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El País on Tuesday. That has changed in recent years. “There is no policy to ensure migration is orderly and regulated, so it is controlled by smugglers with horrific human rights violations.”

The former Prime Minister of Portugal also lamented that double standards are often applied in migration policies, causing “deep frustration” in the South. “There was a lot of openness to refugees from Ukraine – and that’s very good. But those same countries were completely closed to the Syrian refugees. And we saw the horrific images of them moving through the Balkans in chaotic conditions.”
