The municipal services of Innsbruck (IKB) had to admit errors on Tuesday when cleaning the weir system for the Untere Sill power plant. The weir was opened just as the fishermen’s association was releasing young fish. They did not survive the mud-filled deluge.
What happened: On Monday, the weir was opened to free it of wood and other materials. This is a necessary step, explain those responsible at IKB. This is the only way the power plant can continue to operate reliably.
Head of department says: ‘This must not happen’
However, the muddy flood caused by the opening of the weir had fatal consequences. Because at the same time, the fishing association was busy encouraging young fish. They were swept away by the waves and died. Hundreds of small, but also large fish would have died. “That should not happen”, apologizes IKB division manager Herbert Schmid. In the future, coordination must take place between fish stocks and the first weir opening after the winter.
