In Poland, the co-ruling left-wing alliance Lewica promotes impunity abortion up to the twelfth week (see video above). Currently, assisting with an abortion carries a prison sentence of up to three years.
“This is a severe punishment for a loving husband, a partner, a mother, a sister, a friend who wants to help and buys the pills that are most often used today to end pregnancies,” MP Maria Zukowska said in a statement on Thursday. Parliamentary debate. Prime Minister Donald Tusk promised to liberalize abortion rights during the election campaign, but his three-party government is now debating how far the relaxation should go.
One of the strictest laws in Europe
Poland’s abortion laws are among the strictest in Europe. Abortion is only allowed after rape or incest or if the life of the pregnant woman is in danger. If the fetus has serious deformities, those affected should not have an abortion.
The already strict law was further tightened in 2020. As a result, in recent years there have been several cases when pregnant women died during treatment in the hospital, after doctors did not decide to have an abortion despite complications.
Four concepts submitted
The three coalition partners have now submitted four bills on liberalization to parliament – previously there were only two. This includes, for example, a general liberalization until the twelfth week. Further proposals provide for exemption from punishment or consent if there is a risk to the pregnant woman and the fetus.
The Speaker of the Polish Parliament, Szymon Holownia, would like to let citizens vote in a referendum. If the majority were in favor of a solution, the pressure on President Andrzej Duda would be greater. He has so far vetoed any new law. In a November 2022 survey, 70 percent of respondents said they supported the full right to abortion up to the twelfth week.
Deadline rules in Austria
In Austria, abortions within the first three months are generally unpunished, but are still regulated by the criminal code. If there is a danger to the life of the pregnant woman or the fetus, or if the pregnant woman was under 14 years old at the time of conception, an abortion can be performed later.
