In the middle of the costly, bloody war in Ukraine, Moscow is calling up its reservists for exercises. Many now fear that this is just an excuse and that the men will actually be sent to the front.
On Wednesday, the Government Gazette published a document signed by President Vladimir Putin committing the reservists to this year’s exercise. The decision will allow the Defense Department to issue corresponding instructions to district military offices, which will then call up reservists registered with them for exercises, the Tass state agency reports.
Many flee abroad
Given the war in Ukraine, many reservists may doubt whether they only do exercises or whether they should be sent to the front in the neighboring country. Even when recruits were called up recently, many young men had preferred to flee abroad. According to foreign estimates, Russia has some two million reservists, of whom some 150,000 are reportedly deployed in Ukraine. The following tweet shows the document in its original:
Russia is turning into a “digital concentration camp”
In mid-April, the Russian State Duma passed a lightning vote to pass a new law that would make it easier for the authorities to draft men into war. From now on, conscription orders must not only be sent by letter, but also electronically.
It is no longer possible not to get a summons, the people are completely at the mercy of the authorities. In addition, officials announced that the facial recognition system installed in the Russian capital was already being used to search for conscripts. Now no one is really safe anymore. Because there are cameras on every corner in Russia – in many cases even in front of the stairwell.
