“Cheap trick” – lack of doctors: now the rest time must be reduced

Date:

Blocked hospital beds, unfilled medical positions, the need for nursing staff and administration: there is a huge bottleneck in the Austrian health system. To counteract this, the weekly rest period for hospital staff will be reduced from the current 36 hours to 24 hours. But the medical association has already heavily criticized it.

A corresponding legislative change regarding the rest period will be initiated next week at the conference of state health officials in Burgenland with a consensus at the state level.

Medical Association: “Cheap trick”
The medical association criticized Friday. “The states and their hospital operators want to use this cheap and easily transparent ploy to ensure that those gaps in health care for which politicians themselves are primarily responsible are closed by those who have been at the limit for years,” said Harald Mayer, Federal Curie chairman. of the employed doctors and vice president of the Austrian Medical Association, quoted in a press release.

2775 hospital beds blocked in Austria
Across Austria, 2775 hospital beds are currently blocked (as of May 2023). The GÖD health union and the young people presented these figures at a press conference in Vienna on Friday. Chairman Reinhard Waldhör spoke of an “emergency situation”. The situation is exacerbated by nearly 700 physician vacancies, it said. In addition, 2200 nursing staff would be missing.

“The high workload and the lack of medical nursing staff have led to the fact that many more beds are currently blocked than in AKH Vienna with 1732,” said Waldhör.

According to GÖD, the figures refer to all state and community hospitals in Austria (33,000 beds). Across Austria, 8.41 percent of beds are blocked. There are no figures on bans for the total of 61,927 beds in 264 hospitals according to Statistics Austria (as of the end of 2021).

Ministry: “Situation is known”
Waldhör called for a hospital summit by Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens). However, the ministry made it clear in the morning that there would be no such crisis summit. The situation is, of course, known. “It is precisely for this reason that reforms in the context of tax equalization are currently being negotiated. Therefore, from the point of view of the Ministry of Health, there is no need for a hospital summit,” said the ministry. In any case, there is constant exchange with the countries.
