The machine tool recovers in 2021 with a 20% increase in activity

From today until the 17th, the 31st edition of the Machine Tool Biennalea sector of great importance for the economy, as highlighted by the Basque Statistical Institute, Eustat, which has indicated that, after a year of intense activity, it has shown growth of around 20% in 2021.

In 2020, a year conditioned by covid-19, the sector had a turnover of 813 million euros after having achieved a maximum turnover of more than 1,000 million euros two years earlier, with 4,099 employees.

Compared to the entire Spanish state, the CAV machine tool accounted for 53% in 2020.

In 2020, with the strictest restrictions on activity due to the pandemic, the turnover of the 108 branches dedicated to machine tools decreased by 17.2%, in line with what happened in the sector as a whole in the BAC , which underwent an 18.2% adjustment.

In absolute terms, the final turnover for the sector in 2020 amounted to 813 million euros compared to 982.4 million the year before. In addition, the sector came out of a two-year period, 2017 and 2018, which saw record numbers, with sales of more than a billion: 1,043.4 million in 2018 and 1,027 million in 2017.

By contrast, the sector lost just over 100 jobs in 2020 compared to the previous year, which is 2.7% less.

The territorial analysis reveals the undisputed main role of Gipuzkoa More than six out of ten sites in the Basque Country are located in this area, where 75.7% of the sector’s workforce is concentrated and up to almost 80% of the turnover in 2020, a ratio that has remained virtually unchanged in recent years.

Bizkaia (28 branches) and Álava (12 branches) share the remaining employment with a percentage of 17% for the former and 7.4% for the latter, and a turnover of 15.7% and 5% respectively.
