Moldova is withdrawing from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the organization that unites several states of the former Soviet Union under one roof. This was announced by parliament speaker Igor Grosu on Monday in Chisinau. Because of the war in Ukraine, there can be no more “community,” he explained.
After consultations with President Maia Sandu, the government and civil society representatives, he first decided to apply for his country’s immediate withdrawal from the Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS member states, Grosu said. He belongs to the pro-European Action and Solidarity (PAS) party, which has an absolute majority in parliament.

After a founding member of the CIS, namely the Russian Federation, “barbarously attacked another founding member – Ukraine, occupied parts of its territory and killed countless of its citizens”, “there can be no more talk of a community”, the Moldovan Chamber President explains.
According to Grosu, Moldova’s departure from the CIS will be gradual and the process is generally “quite complicated and time consuming”. However, after 30 years of CIS membership, one can conclude without any ifs and buts that this did not even contribute to the resolution of his country’s frozen conflict with breakaway Transnistria and to the withdrawal of the Russian army or the so-called “peacekeepers”. According to Grosu, membership in the CIS has in no way saved Moldova “from gas extortion in the middle of winter”.

The government and parliament would now decide on “the next steps” in the course of the exit procedure – steps that Moldovan citizens “expect from us so that their children can hope for a stable European future”, the Moldovan parliament speaker added .
