DNA was analyzed – scratched car in South Tyrol: Bear is innocent

Date:

A DNA analysis has shown that, contrary to initial assumptions, no bear is responsible for a scratched car in South Tyrol. Last week, “scratch and bite marks” were discovered on a car in a settlement in Völs am Schlern, the suspicion initially fell on a brown bear as the culprit.

Analysis of collected hair now showed that it was not a bear. It is still unclear which animal caused the damage, the state of South Tyrol announced on Tuesday. Further investigations are underway.

It was first suspected that the coolant’s sweet taste might have attracted a bear. Rangers and game wardens examined the car and found her on the front bumper. “The Bureau of Hunting and Fisheries asks not to make hasty assumptions about large carnivores and to always use reliable facts, such as DNA analyzes in this case,” the state authority said.

Debates after tragic death
In northern Italy, there has been intensive discussion in recent weeks about how to deal with bears and other predators. The reason was a fatal attack by a bear on a 26-year-old jogger in Trentino. As a result, a female bear was caught, suspected to be the culprit. There was a heated debate over her murder, and a court eventually dismissed it.

South Tyrol and Tyrol recently tried to calm down by pointing out that there were no conspicuous animals in the regions. There is no increased risk to the population, it was assured.
