“New Missile” – Concerns about North Korea’s technological breakthrough

Date:

North Korea’s latest test of a long-range ballistic missile is likely more explosive than previously thought. Because, according to the regime in Pyongyang, the missile was equipped with a solid fuel propulsion system. “The test has demonstrated the military effectiveness of the new long-range ballistic missile as a strategic weapon,” state news agency KCNA said Friday. This would “significantly improve North Korea’s strategic deterrence and preparedness for nuclear counterattacks”.

South Korea and Japan had previously drawn attention to the missile test. “North Korea appears to have launched a new missile that may be solid-fuelled,” South Korea’s military leadership said in a statement. If the missile were actually a solid-fuel rocket, it would be a technological breakthrough for the North Korean military. The missile was launched at 7:23 a.m. (local time) on Thursday from a platform with a medium or longer range and flew 1,000 kilometers, the South Korean military said. She then landed in the Baltic Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.

Until now, North Korea’s missile arsenal has consisted only of liquid-fuelled missiles. However, solid fuel rockets are easier to transport and store, making them more difficult to detect. They also prepare for launch faster than liquid fuel rockets. “South Korea’s and US intelligence agencies are analyzing the details,” South Korea’s military leaders said, adding that “they are working closely with the US to maintain the utmost preparedness.” The US condemned North Korea for testing a “long-range ballistic missile”.

Also tested underwater drone
North Korea has fired a number of missiles in recent weeks and says it has also tested a nuclear drone under water. Earlier this week, according to state media, ruler Kim Jong-un called for expanding the country’s war-deterrence capabilities in a “more hands-on and offensive” way.
