High inflation is a concern for many young people in Austria. According to a recent survey, nearly half of Generation Z (ages 18-28) and millennials (ages 29-40) live from one paycheck to the next. For many, a pay rise or promotion is still a long way off.
Six in 10 Gen Z and Millennials worry that inflation will limit their ability to raise, according to a Deloitte study. Five out of ten young people think that they will not be promoted due to the economic situation. More than 60 percent of Gen Z and millennials fear that buying a home will be difficult or impossible if the economy doesn’t pick up.
At the same time, more than 40 percent of Generation Z fear that the current economic situation may lead companies and employers to cut back on climate protection measures. Only about 30 percent of millennials believe this.
Climate crisis as one of the most pressing problems
According to the study, the climate crisis is currently the most pressing problem for young people in Austria, after the cost of living. Just over 10 percent of the respondents are convinced that large companies contribute to protecting the environment. “More than a third of those surveyed have already turned down a potential employer because of moral or ethical concerns,” said Elisa Aichinger, Partner at Deloitte Austria.
Worldwide, 22,000 young people were surveyed for the report, in Austria there were 500. Millennials are those born between 1983 and 1994, and Generation Z are those born between 1995 and 2004.
