The collision with the truck probably happened at high speed: a delivery truck was thrown from Riederstraße into an embankment on Tuesday afternoon. All help came too late for the 56-year-old driver from Frankenburg (Upper Austria).
It was only after about three hours that the fire brigade was able to remove the dead driver of the van from his vehicle. “The emergency doctor immediately determined that the driver was no longer alive,” reports Mathias Gruber, head of operations at FF Ried. “We were only allowed to start the rescue after the accident site had been cleared. The steering wheel was seriously stuck.”
Thrown in the roadside
At around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a minibus and a semi-trailer collided on the B141 Riederstraße in Hohenzell. The smaller vehicle is likely to have swung far into a roadside verge and came to a slanting stop on its descent to a soccer field.
The driver of the van, a 56-year-old from Frankenburg, is said to have died on the spot.
The truck driver was terrified
The truck driver received a severe shock, but luckily no physical injuries. His alcohol test was negative.
After the accident, the B141 was completely closed to traffic for three hours. The fire service provided a major diversion.
