Vienna is a role model – switching to public transport leads to a huge CO2 reduction

Date:

According to the Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ), switching from cars with a combustion engine to public transport reduces climate-damaging CO2 emissions by more than 80 percent. Above all, the Viennas make an enormously important contribution to climate protection.

According to a VCÖ analysis based on data from Statistics Austria, Viennese have an advantage when it comes to using public transport. A survey across Austria shows that seven out of ten Vienna use the tram, bus or metro several times a week or even daily, the VCÖ announced on Monday.

The figures exclude young people and children under the age of 16. Only seven percent of the Viennese population aged 16 and older never use public transport, while 41 percent never drive a car. The current mobility survey for Vienna also showed that last year 44 percent of all Viennese made their daily trips on foot or by bicycle. On the other hand, only 26 percent of people in the federal capital regularly use their cars. “The Viennese thus make an important contribution to climate protection,” said the VCÖ.

Vienna has the most attractive offer
In Vienna, the choice of means of transport is greater than in any other city in the country. That is also important “to be able to achieve the climate goals”, says VCÖ spokesman Christian Gratzer. In Austria, only three out of ten people often use public transport.

According to the VCÖ analysis, demographic changes, increasing heat and the shift to more renewable energy from sun, wind and water are changing the preconditions. According to Statistics Austria’s population forecast, nearly 228,000 Viennese will belong to the 75+ generation in 2040, which is 64,000 more than today. That is why increased measures for a senior-friendly transport system – such as accessibility and lower speeds in the area – are important.

Because of the heat: mobility should be more space-saving
The number of hot days with more than 30 degrees has already increased sharply in Vienna. The heat will also continue to rise. “This means that more shady trees and greenery are needed along the streets in the neighbourhoods, our mobility needs to become more space-efficient,” says the VCÖ. Car sharing deals would also help. The potential for this is particularly great in Vienna. According to the VCÖ, the 93,000 second cars in Viennese households only drive an average of 6,000 kilometers per year.

“Shape the future now”
To take into account the positive developments, the VCÖ has launched the Vienna Mobility Award in cooperation with the City of Vienna under the motto “Shape the future now”. Businesses and companies, start-ups, housing developers, the city districts, schools and universities, initiatives and individuals are invited to submit projects that already show how the mobility of the future can be better and more climate-friendly. ÖBB supports the award.
