Clear the way to return home – Salzburg IS supporter: Now the lawyer speaks

Date:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently working on the repatriation of Maria G. The suspected IS supporter from Salzburg has been interned in northern Syria since 2019. Her lawyer has also made a public statement and revealed what Maria G. could expect in Austria.

Maria G.’s lawyer, Doris Hawelka, was very pleased with the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs not to lodge an objection to the planned repatriation in an interview with the Ö1 ‘Morgenjournal’ on Thursday. This means that the judgment of the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG) is legally binding.

Maria G. is threatened with legal proceedings, sons of grandparents?
Maria G. also knew that she was threatened with proceedings in Austria for participating in a terrorist organization, Hawelka emphasizes. Her two sons would certainly have ‘a place with their grandparents’. The lawyer assured that they would “lovingly care for the children” and support them in “starting a normal life”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently working on repatriation plans in close cooperation with the responsible authorities and international partners, the ministry announced on Wednesday evening.

Fighting in Syria
The safety of the Austrian operations team and those requiring repatriation is the highest priority. Due to the ongoing fighting in the region, these plans are extremely complex. In Austria, after return, it is the turn of the judicial authorities.

In its decision last week, the BVwG determined that G. and her children should be returned to Austria together. However, the court allowed an appeal against the ruling within a period of six weeks. “This legal remedy would not have a suspensive effect and would therefore be de facto irrelevant to the specific case,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
