Deep sorrow at the great Islamic clubs in Graz: they lost at least three young members at the murderous Spree in Borg Dreierschützengasse. “May God help us – for our children, our city, our country and our safety,” says it deeply.
“We were all in shock yesterday,” says Elvedin Omerčević on Wednesday morning. The chairman of the styric association of the Bosniaks remembers how he experienced the terrible hours: “I found out the media about the murderous Spree. Every hour became known to new deaths, when it turned out that one of the victims was a member of our club.”
The community is relieved, the board members in close exchange with the affected family. “The little one was a member of our dance club,” says Omerčević. She was only 16 when the 21-year-old ex-student took away her young life on Tuesday. Your funeral will take place in Bosnia, before a shared farewell in the mosque in the Puntigam district is planned. “Our doors are open to everyone,” emphasizes the club chairman. Another young Bosnian must also be with the victims.
More than 400 people in prayer
On the day of the horroract, however, there was already a memorial service in the mosque of the Islamic Cultural Center Graz. “In deep sorrow we have devoted our petition to the Almighty God to the victims and we hit the people of yesterday last night,” says Instagram. The prayer was aimed at all victims, Imam Fikret Fazlić emphasizes – but one is mainly relieved by the loss of two members of the community, a girl and a boy.
“More than 400 people came to prayer yesterday, especially young people,” says Fazlić. Already on Tuesday morning he had been a pastor for the Askö Hall, where the parents of the students met together with the clubs and the city, he now wants to organize all the further steps: “May God assist us for our children, our city, our country and our safety.”
“In such situations, words of hope are good”
Two Catholic memorial services also took place in Graz on Tuesday evening. The entire top of the federal government has gathered in the Graz Cathedral, among other things. Auxiliary Bias Schop Johannes Freitag expressed the horror with which one is confronted in the Graz School with a view to the tragedy. “Many are stunned according to this unbearable act. We carry the unbearable together,” he asked the present. “In such situations it is good to hear and say words of hope,” he told the collected.
A memorial service for the victims also took place in the St. Vinzenz parish of St. Vinzenz. The church is just not far from the crime scene and in the scattering of the affected high school. He immediately passed on Tuesday during the mission at the neighboring school and thought of “the young people,” said Pastor Bernhard Pesendorfer in his sermon in the evening. “At such a moment you become aware that there is little that you can really build on in life.”
Sea of lights on Graz Main Square
After 9 p.m., many people had also gathered for a sea of lights on the main square of Graz. They lit candles from the Archduke Johann Fountain. There were especially many young people among grieving people, but couples in evening clothing could also be seen. Some hugged and gave themselves comfort. Behind the mourning people was the black flag in the town hall of Graz and occasionally supervisors of the crisis intervention team were ready to help people if necessary.
