The Chinese government now wants to work on “restoring peace” between Ukraine and Russia. That is what Special Representative Li Hui said during his visit to the war country.
As China’s foreign ministry announced, Li Hui discussed a “political solution” to the crisis with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other senior Ukrainian government officials during his stay on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Ukrainian side had already commented on the Chinese visit the day before. As a precondition for negotiations, the Kiev government continues to demand the withdrawal of all Russian armed forces from their country. Li Hui will now also visit Russia, Poland, Germany and France to discuss a political solution.
Credibility?
Since the beginning of the war, the leadership in Beijing has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to negotiations. She is not believed internationally, as Russian President Vladimir Putin is supported. While Chinese head of state and party leader Xi Jinping spoke to Putin several times and was only in Moscow in March, there has been only one phone call with Ukrainian President Zelensky so far.
French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had previously traveled to China and asked President Xi Jinping, among others, to call Selenskyj.
Now China has sent a senior diplomat to Ukraine for the first time since the war began. Being the country ready to promote consensus-building in the international community based on its previously submitted position paper, it said. They want to work for an early end to hostilities and for peace.
