Insiders report: – Florida governor DeSantis wants to run for president

Date:

According to insiders, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis wants to officially run for president on May 25. That would make him the biggest competitor of ex-President Donald Trump. The 44-year-old DeSantis has made headlines in recent months with his ultra-conservative policies.

In 2022, DeSantis was reelected governor — nearly 20 percentage points behind his Democratic challenger. Now a new political action committee called Never Back Down has already hired staff and aired television spots supporting DeSantis and attacking Trump in the early precincts. Officially, DeSantis will file his application May 25 at a fundraising event, an insider said Wednesday.

Trump is still leading
The campaign should then run from May 29. Former US President Trump has intensified his political attacks on Florida’s governor in recent weeks. In the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll for the 2024 Republican primary, which will decide the candidacy, Trump is still leading.

Power struggle with Disney
DeSantis has made headlines in recent months with his ultra-conservative policies. For example, diversity programs at state universities in Florida abolished and abortion largely banned. In addition, the governor is engaged in a power struggle with the Disney entertainment group, one of the most influential companies in the US state. In early May, DeSantis signed into law giving a regulator expanded powers over expansion plans for the Walt Disney World theme park in Orlando.

The background is a feud between the governor and Disney over school teaching Florida. Representatives of the group had criticized a new law that restricts the treatment of sexuality and gender identity. DeSantis then described Disney as politically left.
