Threatened for 25 years – US Secret Service scandal: suspect still in custody

Date:

The suspect in the US intelligence scandal must remain in prison until his trial begins. A judge ruled on Friday. The 21-year-old IT worker is accused of, among other things, the unauthorized passing on of information about national defence. He faces up to 25 years in prison.

Jack Teixeira worked in the US Army and is on trial in a Massachusetts court. He is charged with unauthorized deletion, storage and transmission of classified and national defense information. According to the public prosecutor’s office, he had already been warned and instructed by his superior in September and October 2022 not to take notes on classified information. Therefore, Teixeira should have been clear that he was breaking the law. His behavior is a clear indication that he would not comply with the court’s requirements, the court said.

A judge had to decide on Friday whether the suspect posed a threat to national security or could be temporarily released. “From the files we currently have, it appears that the defendant violated his promise to protect the information and security of the United States and its allies to a high degree,” US media quoted the judge from the courtroom. It cannot be ruled out that a foreign government will approach Teixeira with an offer to obtain information.

Information about the war in Ukraine and American espionage
The 21-year-old is reportedly suspected of publishing highly confidential documents from the US secret services and the Department of Defense in a private chat room. From there, they would have continued to spread until authorities and the media became aware of them. The classified information included information about the war in Ukraine, but also details about alleged US espionage operations against partners. The suspect was arrested in April. He faces up to 25 years in prison.
