The GTI rush in Carinthia is still missing. Only loyal fans came. However, they are increasingly forgoing parties during their stay and are focusing more on the vehicles again.
Neither the final cancellation of the official meeting nor the large police presence could deter the real tuning fans from coming to Carinthia in May. But, as already mentioned, most of the guests stayed away. “We have an 85 percent economic malaise! Fortunately, we are well positioned and can absorb the loss,” explains Johann Pressinger from Camping Arneitz am Faaker See.
Police presence very high
The inserted fans party less and put the focus back on the vehicles. Loud “gum-gum” or illegal races are a thing of the past, at least during the day. “Even if there are not many of us, the police are always nearby, I don’t want to take any risks,” reveals a GTI driver from Upper Austria to the “Krone”. As many social media videos show, the “GTI fun” is shifting to the night and evening hours.
In any case, there is no longer any question of “holiday with friends”, as many GTI guests criticize. The mayor of Keutschach, Gerhard Oleschko, also agrees: “It has nothing to do with the hospitable culture in the tourist region of Carinthia.”
On Saturday, the well-known “Arneitz turbo corner” was still well attended, but the unofficial meetings were very civilized. “We have not received any reports of riots or major incidents,” police said. “The scene is getting quieter. How the Pentecost weekend will be, however, remains to be seen.”
