Mount Etna has erupted again in Sicily. Catania airport had to be closed because the runway was dirty, the airport operator said.
Increased activity was measured in the early morning hours, the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology announced Sunday. Photos showed lava and ash emanating from the crater on the southeast side.
Etna, over 3,350 meters high, has been very active so far this year. In February it erupted regularly and sometimes spectacularly. The falling ash is often a problem for people in the area. In September, the government of Sicily promised the municipalities two million euros in aid for the ash damage.
