A devastating fire has destroyed the historic main post office in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. All letters, parcels and documents kept in the building were destroyed by the flames.
According to Luis Carlos, Postmaster General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost), the country’s entire stamp library has also been set on fire. “The whole structure itself is important because it is a cultural heritage.” It will certainly be rebuilt.
Almost completely destroyed in 1946
The Manila Central Post Office was built in 1926 but suffered severe damage during World War II. In 1946 it was rebuilt almost faithfully to the original. The famous facade consists of 14 huge columns, semicircular halls are located at both ends of the rectangular building.
The fire broke out due to an inexplicable cause on Sunday evening and was not under control until Monday morning.
