Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters spoke to the UN Security Council in New York on Wednesday about Ukraine and called for a ceasefire. Interesting detail: he came at the invitation of Russia.
“President Biden, President Putin, President Zelenskyy, US, NATO, Russia – all of you – please change course now and immediately agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine,” the 79-year-old musician said in a video address. on Wednesday before the United Nations’ most powerful organ in New York.
Russia had invited the British to the meeting – presumably because it had previously been critical of arms supplies to Ukraine. In his speech, Waters strongly condemned Ukraine’s “illegal” invasion of Ukraine, but also criticized the West: “The Russian invasion of Ukraine was not unprovoked. Therefore, I also condemn the provocateurs in the strongest possible terms.”
“No Cannon Fodder”
In the past, Waters had repeatedly attracted attention with radical views. Among other things, his statement caused criticism that NATO bears the greatest responsibility for the war in Ukraine. In his speech to the international community, he asked for more peaceful cooperation – one cannot go to war all the time.
Some of his statements in the last weekend edition of the “Berliner Zeitung” caused outrage. Accordingly, he would have been “particularly sad” that his former Pink Floyd colleagues had recorded a protest song (“Hey, Hey, Rise Up!” – Editor’s Note) with Ukrainian musician Andriy Khlyvnyuk.
„Hey, hey, get up!“
British rock band Pink Floyd released the song “Hey, Hey, Rise Up!” as a sign of solidarity. Khlyvnyuk joined the Ukrainian armed forces to defend his homeland.
The English group PinkFloyd, founded in 1965, is one of the most successful bands in rock history with albums such as “The Dark Side of The Moon” and “The Wall”. Waters was there until the mid-1980s.
