Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned the West of a military confrontation against the background of the war in Ukraine. “Today we hear that they want to defeat us on the battlefield. What can I say? Let them try,” he said in Moscow on Thursday. Everyone should know that Russia has not really started in Ukraine yet.
Moscow does not reject peace negotiations. “But those who refuse should know that the further they go, the harder it is for them to come to an agreement with us,” Putin said during a meeting with faction leaders of the Duma parties.
Nothing more important than homeland
The president praised the politicians as “true statesmen and patriots” who have supported the “special military operation” in Ukraine from the beginning in late February. “There are many parties, but only one homeland,” Putin said at the Kremlin meeting. “There is nothing more important than the fate of the fatherland.”
Putin once again accused the West of wanting to fight “to the last Ukrainian”. “This is a tragedy for the Ukrainian people.” The West is conducting an “economic blitzkrieg against Russia”.
Russian attacks have recently abated
Meanwhile, the Russian war of aggression is progressing slowly: Although the Russian side has been reporting daily territorial gains since the start of the conflict, there were no reports of newly conquered territory on Wednesday. In recent days there have been only a few – failed – ground attacks.
According to military experts, this points to a Russian ceasefire. The goal is to rebuild the combat power needed for a larger offensive.
