It’s finished! After a transport time of about three weeks, a submarine has reached its new destination. The decommissioned 500-ton colossus made it through its last journey well.
The U17 started in Kiel and can now be admired in the Technical Museum in Speyer (Rhineland-Palatinate). The “move” began on April 28. The impressive transport has traveled quite a distance.
First, the class 206A submarine was lifted onto a floating pontoon in Kiel. From there it went via the Kiel Canal and the North Sea first to Rotterdam and then up the Rhine past Cologne, Mainz and Mannheim to Speyer, the TV channel RTL reports.
U17 had been in service since 1973 before finally retiring in 2010. The transport finally reached the museum grounds around 1 p.m. on Sunday, under the astonished gaze of nearly 2,000 spectators.
The mighty 500-tonne behemoth will remain there until it is presented at the Technik Museum Sinsheim. According to the spokeswoman, this can also be viewed from the inside.
